Global Health Curriculum
Lena Wiley, MD has established a new Global Health Track curriculum for the Loyola Ob/Gyn residents. The objectives of the three year program include:
  • Providing community-oriented patient care that is compassionate and effective for the treatment of the health problems and the promotion of health
  • Understanding the scope of established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological and social-behavioral knowledge needed by an obstetrician; demonstrate the ability to acquire, critically interpret and apply the knowledge in patient care and community health
  • During international elective, demonstrating competencies in procedural and surgical skills utilizing limited resources
  • Demonstrating interpersonal and communication skills that result in information exchange and partnering with patients, their families, their communities, and professional associates
  • Demonstrating knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for continuous self-assessment, using scientific methods and evidence to investigate, evaluate, and improve one’s patient care practice
  • Demonstrating a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles and sensitivity to diversity when caring for patients in a developed or developing country setting
  • Understanding how to practice high-quality health care and advocate for patients within the context of the health care system

OUTLINE OF PROGRAM:

  • Didactic Sessions - A monthly didactic lecture will take place in the evening focusing on various topics related to international health and facilitated by participants in the program.
  • Journal Club - Quarterly journal clubs in which a participant will select and present on a global health journal article that are a critical base for promoting competent practice in resource challenged communities.
  • Book Club - Two participants will facillitate a book club biannauly on selected texts written by global health experts. The book club will promote interactive discussion on a pertinent global health issues.
  • National/ International Global Health Care Conference - Attendance and / or a presentation at one global health conference during the PGY 2 year.
  • International Travel - Four week elective in Guyana during PGY 4 resident year learning clinical and surgical skills in a developing country while also participating in teaching of residents/medical officers in the obstetrics and gynecology residency program at the Georgetown Public Hospital in Guyana.
  • Grand Rounds - Each participant is required to be the primary presenter during a grand rounds presentation on a international topic of their choice i.e. women’s health issue encountered in Guyana or discussion of topic of your choice learned at a global health conference.
  • Fnal Project - Serve as the culmination of all that was learned during the program and serves to reflect the participant’s knowledge on various issues that affect women abroad. 

At the end of this three year program, each participant will be awarded a certificate of completion from the Loyola Obstetrics and Gynecology Global Health Program.
